ISO 50001:2011 Energy Management System
The ISO 50001 standard was released by the ISO committee in June 2011 and specifies the requirement for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving energy management system whose purpose is to enable an organisation to follow a systematic approach achieving continual improvement of energy performance including any energy efficiency, energy security, energy use and consumption.
If you have an ISO5001 and the management system that is certified by an approved certification body and covers all your energy use this counts as your ESOS assessment. If you are a compliant via this route you would not need to calculate your energy consumption and would not require a lead assessor to comply with ESOS.
The ISO50001 standard is a globally accepted framework for managing energy, providing technical and management strategies for enterprises to increase energy efficiency, reduce costs, and improve environmental performance. Organisations, by following the ISO 50001 standard, can create a method for establishing a policy, a program, and a culture of energy and asset management that is cost effective—both financially and environmentally. ISO 50001 certification is particularly relevant to organisations needing to demonstrate compliance with the Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme (ESOS).
ISO50001 and is suitable for any organization irrespective of its size, sector or location. The ISO50001 standard aims to help organizations continually reduce their energy use, and therefore their energy costs and their greenhouse gas emissions. E.g:
- Reduce energy costs, reduce carbon emissions and improve reputation.
- Comply with legislation – ESOS
- Demonstrate energy efficient and environmentally responsible credentials to increase tender opportunities.
- Communicate a real commitment to environmental improvement and CSR.
- Identify and manage the risks surrounding your future energy supply.
